When Coverage Starts
Coverage for you and your dependents is effective on your date of hire once you have
completed an enrollment form. If your start date is the first of the month, your
insurance becomes effective immediately upon completion of the enrollment form.
If your start date is any other date such as the middle of the month, your insurance
becomes effective on the first of the following month. When you add a spouse, coverage
will begin on the first day of the month following your marriage.
Your newborn dependent child is automatically covered on the date of birth. However, to continue coverage you must add the newborn
within 31 days from the date of birth.
You have 31 days from the date of your marriage to complete the enrollment form to add your spouse to your insurance. Coverage will begin on the first day of the month following your marriage if you have submitted the form to the UCLA GME Office.
If you are not at work on the date your coverage would become effective, coverage
for you and your dependents will not begin until you return to work. If your
dependent (other than a newborn child) is confined in a hospital or other
institution on the date coverage would normally start, Medical Plan coverage will
not start until:
The date he or she is discharged, or
The date he or she is no longer confined.
Call the UCLA House Staff Office at (310) 825-8307 to obtain the appropriate forms
to add or change your coverage for your eligible dependents.
