Here the children are given a chance to interact with farm
animals at their own level. They can pet, feed and photograph the
small animals that have free run of the grounds. Larger animals such
as cows, horses, sheep and pigs are kept in pens, and children are
encouraged to acquaint themselves with the animals while under
adult supervision. Children are also welcome to climb on any of the
old tractors or other retired farm equipment. The proprietors make
grain available to those who wish to feed the animals. Open every
Saturday and Sunday and most holidays from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

The Page museum is located on the site of the famous La Brea
Tar Pits. The museum features exhibits, skeletons and fossils of
many animals and plants that have been entombed over the years
in the Tar Pits. Exhibits include saber-toothed tigers, giant ground
sloths, and mastodons. Every summer, the museum opens Pit 91
for excavation, and visitors can watch from an observation area.
The museum shop sells books and gifts. Open Monday–Friday
9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 10:00 a.m.–5:00. Adults $7.00;
children 5–12 $2.00; students and seniors $4.50. Free admission
the first Tuesday of each month. Parking is $8.00; with museum
validation you get a $2 refund.

The museum has been designed to show works of art to their
best advantage. Five two-story pavilions set around an open
courtyard house permanent collections and changing exhibitions. As
you move between these pavilions, walkways and balconies offer
changing views of the city, and of an inner courtyard, with trees,
fountains and reflecting pools. The Museum cafe is located off the
courtyard. The Museum gift store offers art books, games and gifts
for all ages. Hours: Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday 10 a.m. to
6 p.m.; Friday–Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Monday and major
holidays. Admission is free but parking is $8.00 per car. Visitors can
also arrive by bus, taxi, or shuttle.

THE GETTY VILLA, 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific

Newly re-opened in 2006, the Villa houses an extensive collection
of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities arranged by themes
including Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and
Stories of the Trojan War. With objects dating from 6,500 B.C. to
A.D. 400, the collection contains sculptures and artifacts of everyday
life such as vases, coins, sculpture, and jewelry. Some of the
objects, including a mummy, have never been on view. A special
climate-controlled room features the Statue of a Victorious Youth, a
sculpture of an Olympic victor, which is one of the few life-sized
Greek bronzes to
have survived to
modern times.

more about Greek,
Roman, and
Etruscan art in the
TimeScape Room,
which presents
interactive exhibits
that focus on time,
place, and artistic
style in the ancient
Mediterranean.

Villa is free, but

This museum sits on 207 acres of landscaped grounds which
include a gorgeous Japanese garden, a beautiful rose garden, a
desert garden, an Elizabethan herb garden, and a huge Chinese
garden which is still in the construction phase. Mr. Huntington’s
former home has been converted into an art gallery which is
filled with a collection of 18th and 19th century oil paintings,
furniture and decorative accessories. Famous art works include
Gainsborough’s Blue Boy and paintings by Reynolds. The library
contains 600,000 books, many of which are first editions. The
display cases offer such treasures as a Gutenberg Bible, letters from
George Washington, a First Folio of Shakespeare, original works
by Emily Dickinson, Benjamin Franklin and others. Hours: noon–
4:30 Tuesday–Friday; Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for students, $12.00 for
seniors, $6.00 for children 5–11, and children under 5 free. Free
admission on the first Thursday of every month.

English tea is served Tues–Sun. in the Rose Garden Tea Room,
which overlooks 3 acres of roses. A pot of brewed tea and a basket
of freshly baked scones are served at each table. From a central buffet, guests may choose from an array of finger sandwiches. Also
available from the buffet are strawberries and cream, fresh seasonal
fruit, imported cheeses and crackers, and freshly baked miniature
pastries. Best of all, you can return to the buffet as often as you
like. There is no dress code in the Tea Room and children are

Take a journey through the past and into the present as you
encounter the incredibly lifelike figures displayed in high-quality
theme settings. More than 170 persons are recreated in wax,
including movie and tv stars, famous athletes, historical and
religious figures and a chamber of horrors. Open daily, 10:00 a.m.–
12:00 a.m. Admission is $15.95 for adults; $13.95 for seniors; $6.95
for children 6–12 and free for children under 6.

JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM, at the corner of First Street and Central in downtown L.A

The Japanese American National Museum is the only museum in
the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. The permanent and rotating exhibits chronicle
Japanese life in the United States, highlighting distinctive aspects
of Japanese-American culture ranging from the internment camp
experience during the early years of World War II to the lives of
Japanese Americans in Hawaii. The museum store carries gift items
ranging from hand-fired sake sets to mini Zen gardening kits. Open
Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
on Thursday. Admission is $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, $4.00
students and children aged 6–17.
